India At UN: Historically Elected Member Of ECOSOC

India wins seat in prestigious ECOSOC body!

India splendidly won election at the United Nations on Tuesday, the very eve
which marks the start of the General Assembly’s historic 75th session as well
as its first virtually held assembly, because of the ongoing world COVID-19
pandemic.

India, Afghanistan and China had contested the elections from Asia-Pacific
states among others namely–Argentina, Austria, Dominican Republic, Israel,
Latvia, Nigeria, Turkey, and Zambia. Coming to the results, India and
Afghanistan won the ballot among the 54 members.
Significantly, India beat China to win a four-year term from 2021 to 2025 on
the UN’s Commission on the Status of Women (CWS), a prestigious wing of the
world body’s Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

In the assembly, with all 54 members of the Economic and Social Council
voting, Afghanistan and India were elected with 39 and 38 votes respectively.
China ended with 27, one short of the cut-off tally of 28.

Ambassador TS Truimurti, India’s permanent representative to the United
Nations, took the Good News on twitter, on Tuesday and tweeted while
thanking all the members of ECOSOC, "India wins seat in prestigious ECOSOC
body!" He continued, "India elected Member of Commission on Status of
Women #CSW. It’s a ringing endorsement of our commitment to promote
gender equality and women’s empowerment in all our endeavours.
We thank member states for their support."

 

India, in addition, through endorsements also won a seat each in two of the
other ECOSOC bodies– The Committee for Programme and Coordination
(CPC) and The Commission on Population and Development (CPD).
Terms will begin 2021 when India will also start its two-year stint on the UN
Security Council as a non-permanent member.

Elections to the two other UN bodies of the ECOSOC were announced in a
follow-up tweet by the Deputy Permanent Representative, K Nagaraj Naidu, on
Tuesday.
He tweeted, “India gets elected to three #ECOSOC bodies,” he wrote and
went on to list them.

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the primary global
intergovernmental body which is exclusively dedicated to the promotion of
gender equality and the empowerment of women. It is a commission of the
Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). It promotes women’s rights, captures
the reality of their lives throughout the world, and works rowards shaping
global standards on gender equality as well as the empowerment of women,
according to the its website.

The CWS is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated
to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. And as
a functional commission of the Economic and Social Council. It was
established in June 1946, according to its website.

The CPC is the main subsidiary organ of the ECOSOCl and the UN’s General
Assembly for planning, programming and coordination.
While, The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is said to be core of the
United Nations system established by The UN Charter in 1945 to boost the
three dimensions of sustainable development which are— Economic, Social
and Environmental.

The women of India accounts for 7.5% of the world’s total population. While
certain development indicators show their quality of life is improving.
Nonetheless, becoming a member of UNCSW will definitely add on to the
activities towards gender equality and women empowerment in India.

The General Assembly started its very historic session on Tuesday, but the
General Debates, are scheduled to start September 22. Those will be held
virtually, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Leaders of member states will address the assembly through pre-recorded
videos, which will be presented at the debate by their respective delegations.
