Saving lakhs of bees become passion for engineer Amit Godse
New Delhi : A young chuck named Amit Godse quits his job in the IT sector and takes up bee keeping work. His work has earned him the nickname 'Bee Man'.
How it all Started
Amit is a Mechanical Engineer from Raipur, founder & CEO of Bee Basket. He is an environmentalist by heart & also works on sustainability of mother earth. One lazy afternoon on a holiday in 2013, Amit discovered to his horror that some people from the very community he was living in had destroyed an enormous bee hive using pest control measures. This incident affected Amit to no end, the sheer lack of awareness and imagined fear had resulted in the destruction of a whole colony of bees. And that was the beginning of a long journey.
He was very upset to know that almost 1.5 lakh bees were killed by a pest control team in the housing society. Unable to cope-up with the plight, Godse had started searching websites to know how he could save bees, without harming human beings. Amit took it upon himself to travel the length and breadth of the country to learn techniques to handle bees of varied species and more about the important role these bees played in our eco-system. He had also visited many research centres in Kerala, Orissa, Mahabaleshwar and also attended month long training in The Central Bee Research and Training Institute in Pune. With an aim to accomplish mission, Godse also contacted tribals and farmers, who knew traditional methods of bee handling.
Bee Basket
Initially, he went to schools, colleges, societies and gave lectures on bees. Later, he decided to make as many beekeepers as he could, and he conducted such training in various places. This led to the emergence of Amit's website called 'Bee Basket'. He also set up an NGO called 'Bee Basket'. Meanwhile, being in touch with the tribals, Amit also started getting pure honey from them. The tribal Madha market and from it he and Amit started earning money. Now Amit gets honey from Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. Amit is currently selling five tonnes of honey, without even killing the bees!
